CAPPING WELLS
Capping Wells
with waterra well caps
Monitoring wells should always be capped in order to prevent foreign material from contaminating the well. Often the simplest method used to cap monitoring wells is to place a blind end cap over the open end of the well. Blind end caps are inexpensive and simply press fit onto the well. These caps are available from PVC suppliers and are made for both schedule 40 and 80 pipe in a wide range of sizes. These caps however do not provide any security for the monitoring well.
Suggested Solutions
well protection
In some cases increased levels of well protection are necessary. This can be achieved to some degree by using the Standard Locking Well Cap. The Standard Locking Well Cap fits inside the PVC well and uses a lead screw to compress a rubber gasket which securely fastens the cap to the PVC well. The lead screw is then held in place and prevented from being unscrewed by attaching a padlock to the cap. The Standard Locking Well Caps are relatively inexpensive, however they do require more clearance at the top of the well and that can be an issue if the well is installed in a manhole or a protective casing. In addition, although the Standard Locking Well Cap is constructed entirely from plastic and does not corrode, the same can not be said for most padlocks.
Both the Enviro Cap and the Standard Locking Well Cap provide fastening points within the well for attaching equipment that may need to be suspended in the well.
corrosion
If corrosion is a concern, Waterra also carries the Enviro Cap locking well cap. This cap is corrosion proof plastic and locks with out the use of a padlock. The Enviro Cap uses a special magnetic mechanism sealed within the cap and an exclusive magnetic key to operate the cap and lock. The Enviro Cap also has a very low profile and will fit within most manholes and protective casings.
